However, in addition to lip volume, the distance between the nose and upper lip also has a significant influence on how harmonious, open and attractive a face looks. With increasing age, this distance often lengthens, while the lips become narrower and the red of the lips is less visible. This can make the face look tired or aged – even if the skin quality is good.

The so-called bullhorn lip lift is a surgical procedure that aims precisely to shorten this distance and at the same time lift the upper lip naturally and beautifully.

Preparation

Before the procedure, a personal consultation takes place in our practice in Zurich. During this consultation, we will examine the proportions of your lips in detail and determine which procedure is suitable for you based on your initial situation and your individual wishes. We will also explain the treatment procedure to you in detail and answer all your questions.

Avoid nicotine for at least 2 weeks before and after the operation. Blood-thinning medication should be discontinued in consultation with the prescribing doctor.

The intervention

The Bullhorn Lip Lift is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The procedure takes around 45-60 minutes. After disinfection and marking, a thin strip of skin is removed directly along the nose, the lip is lifted and the wound is closed with fine sutures. The scar is placed exactly below the bridge of the nose and in the nostrils so that it can heal inconspicuously.

If desired, a corner lip lift can be performed at the same time. This extends the duration of the treatment slightly.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you should cool the lip regularly for 2-3 days. During this time, avoid eating hot food, speaking frequently or making sweeping facial expressions. We recommend a soft, cool diet and rest for a week.

For scar care, as soon as the stitches have been removed after 5 to 7 days, we recommend the daily application of a scar ointment containing fat or silicone and consistent sun protection (SPF 50) for several months.

Reasons for a
Bullhorn Lip Lift

Many patients feel that their lips are too narrow or inconspicuous. This is often caused by a sagging of the upper lip as the skin ages naturally and an associated increase in the distance between the nose and upper lip, the area of the philtrum. The upper lip appears narrow, the smile closed and the face looks older overall.

A Bullhorn Lip Lift is particularly suitable for patients with:

  • Genetically narrow or long upper lip
  • Changed lip shape due to aging processes
  • Barely visible upper incisors when smiling
  • Desire for a permanent, natural solution

Bullhorn Lip Lift

With the bullhorn lip lift, a small strip of skin is removed directly below the nose. The incision follows the natural curve of the nasal entrance and its shape is reminiscent of bull horns – hence the name. By lifting the upper lip, the red of the lips appears fuller and the incisors become visible again. The fine scar is inconspicuous and is hidden in the natural skin fold. The correction does not enlarge the lips themselves, but lifts the edge of the lips by gently shortening the skin.

Corner Lip Lift

In some people, the outer corners of the mouth droop considerably when relaxed. This unintentionally gives them a sad or tired facial expression. With a corner lip lift, the corners of the mouth are surgically lifted slightly to give the face a more cheerful expression. A small triangular piece of skin is removed from both corners of the mouth. This procedure leaves only a barely visible scar and can be combined very well with the bullhorn lip lift.

Alternative treatments

It doesn’t always have to be surgery to adjust the shape and volume of the lips. These gentle injection treatments are also suitable for lip correction:

Soft filler (e.g. Karisma): Ideal for smoothing lip wrinkles. The biostimulator stimulates the formation of collagen for natural skin tightening.

Hyaluronic acid: For more volume or to sculpt the shape of the lips; lip injections last for around 6-12 months and can be refreshed at any time.

Autologous fat: a natural and long-term alternative to lip volume treatment. Injected autologous fat only breaks down to a certain extent, the rest remains permanently.

Botulinum: The so-called lip flip lifts the red of the lips through targeted muscle relaxation. The result lasts for several months.

Cost of a bullhorn lip lift in Zurich

The cost of a surgical bullhorn lip lift depends on the complexity of the procedure and the desired combination (e.g. with a corner lip lift). As a rule, you can expect a price starting at around CHF 3,500.

The price includes all expenses such as planning, surgery, anesthesia and follow-up checks. The costs are not usually covered by health insurance, as this is a purely aesthetic correction.

Risks of a bullhorn lip lift

The procedure is low-risk and quick – provided it is performed by an experienced specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery. Thanks to the good blood circulation in the facial area, wound healing is usually problem-free. Slight bruising or swelling after the operation is not unusual and disappears by itself after a few days.

Possible but rare complications are:

  • Wound healing disorders due to inadequate care
  • Temporary feelings of tension or sensitivity
  • Conspicuous scarring (with a corresponding predisposition)

A permanent loss of sensation in the upper lip is not to be expected. The risk of undesirable side effects can be reduced to a minimum through professional execution and careful aftercare.

In contrast to fillers, the results of a Bullhorn Lip Lift are permanent. A follow-up correction is rarely necessary.

The Bullhorn Lip Lift is performed under local anesthesia and is well tolerated. After the operation, there may be temporary bruising, swelling and a slight feeling of tightness, which can be easily treated with cooling and painkillers.

With the Bullhorn Lip Lift, the scar runs inconspicuously along the natural nasal fold and inside the nostrils, and is usually barely visible after a few weeks.

After approx. 3-5 days you will be fit for social life again. The final result of the Bullhorn Lip Lift can be expected after about 3 months.
