Procedure for chin correction

Preparation

As with every treatment in our Zurich practice, a detailed consultation takes place before chin correction. Here we get to know you and your wishes personally, get an idea of the initial situation and discuss the appropriate options. For surgical procedures, blood-thinning medication should be discontinued and alcohol and nicotine should be temporarily avoided.

The intervention

Non-invasive treatments such as fillers or fat-away injections are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Chin correction with an implant is usually performed under general anesthesia and can be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis, depending on the additional procedures. The approach can be made from the inside through the oral mucosa or from the outside directly under the chin. The scar will be barely visible from the outside and is about 1 cm long.

Aftercare

Aftercare also depends on the method chosen. After surgical procedures, we usually place a small drain which is removed after a day. In the case of access through the oral mucosa, we recommend a soft, cool diet for 2-3 days. Physical exertion and sport should be avoided for about 2-3 weeks. For minimally invasive procedures, occasional cooling of the treated area is advisable to avoid swelling and redness.

Reasons for a chin correction

A receding chin, a disproportionately large chin or even a so-called double chin – they can all have a negative impact on the facial profile from the perspective of the person affected. They often want more definition in the chin-jaw line area.

While many of these features are genetic and develop at a young age, changes such as sagging skin, fat deposits or chin wrinkles can also occur with age and make the facial contours appear softer and older.

Depending on the technique, a chin correction can lead to more radiance, profile harmony and a firmer appearance – sometimes with immediately visible or even permanent results.

Methods of chin correction

Depending on the initial findings and the desired result, different procedures are used to correct the chin. We will be happy to find out with you in a personal consultation which method is suitable for your individual wishes.

Chin augmentation with implant

A permanent and precise result can be achieved with a specially adapted chin implant. This is usually made of solid silicone and is inserted through a small 1 cm incision – either inside the mouth or under the chin – and fixed in place with titanium screws. The operation is often combined with a nose correction. However, implants can also be inserted in the cheek area or jaw angle at the same time.

Volume build-up with fillers or autologous fat

In the case of slight chin recession or to compensate for minor asymmetries, the chin can also be sculpted using hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapatite or autologous fat. The procedure is low-risk, is performed under local anesthesia and achieves an immediately visible, natural-looking result. The results of treatment with hyaluronic acid or botulinum last between 6 and 9 months. After treatment with collagen stimulators, the effect of the treatment lasts for more than a year.

Liposuction for a double chin

We speak of a double chin when stubborn fat deposits are found in the area between the neck and chin. These can be permanently removed by liposuction. To do this, a fine cannula is inserted into the tissue, which sucks out the excess fat cells completely.

Fat-away injection

The so-called fat-away injection is suitable for smaller fat deposits in the chin area. It is particularly popular with patients who do not wish to undergo surgery. During injection lipolysis, deoxycholanic acid is injected into the fatty tissue, which is then broken down over several weeks. As a rule, around 2-4 sessions are required to achieve meaningful results.

Treatment of the chin muscles (e.g. dropped chin)

A so-called “dropped chin” is caused by overactivity or slackening of the chin muscle. Botulinum toxin injections, surgical tightening or radiofrequency treatments can help here. These methods improve the skin structure, reduce wrinkles and refine the lower facial contour without visible scars.

Risks of a chin correction

Surgical chin correction is a safe procedure, provided it is performed by an experienced specialist such as Dr. Tremp. Possible side effects, which can occur relatively frequently but disappear after a short time, include swelling, bruising, a feeling of tightness or temporary sensory disturbances. Rare risks include infections or wound healing disorders – however, thanks to careful technique and aftercare, these only occur in exceptional cases. Most patients are socially acceptable again after a few days.
