Ear correction in Zurich

Ear correction – for naturally fitting ears

Protruding ears are usually completely harmless – but for many sufferers they are a considerable aesthetic burden. Particularly in childhood, they can lead to teasing and insecurity, but adults also often find their ear shape annoying.

At our practice in Zurich – Tremp Plastic Surgery – we offer a wide range of procedures to correct the auricle, first and foremost otoplasty. In this surgical procedure, the shape or position of the pinna is permanently adjusted. The aim is to achieve a natural, harmonious result that blends inconspicuously with the individual facial profile. The procedure is low-risk, easy to plan and can also be performed on children in justified cases.

We attach great importance to precise, gentle implementation – adapted to your particular anatomy and life situation. We will be happy to advise you on this.

Preparation

A detailed consultation takes place in our practice before the procedure. Here we discuss the initial situation and your wishes and determine the appropriate technique together. For children, we also check whether ear growth is complete (from approx. 4 years of age).

The intervention

Ear correction is performed on an outpatient basis – in children usually under twilight sleep or general anesthesia, in adults often under local anesthesia. The surgical incision is made discreetly behind the ear. There, the ear cartilage is sculpted or reduced. The ear is then fixed in its new position and a head bandage is applied.

weiter zu: AFTERCARE

Aftercare

After the operation, you will wear the supportive head bandage for 7 to 14 days continuously, then for a further 7 nights only when sleeping. This bandage stabilizes the new shape and supports wound healing. Swelling and slight bruising are normal and will subside within a few days. Sports activities – especially contact sports – should be avoided for about 6 weeks.

Reasons for an
ear correction

In most cases, protruding or asymmetrical ears are caused by genetically determined malformations of the ear cartilage, for example a missing anthelix fold or an enlarged auricle (concha). The deformity usually develops in the first few years of life and remains permanent if it is not treated.

Although protruding ears do not cause any functional problems such as a reduction in hearing, they can severely impair aesthetic perception. Other changes include an asymmetrical ear shape or torn or overstretched earlobes.

Many children and adults feel uncomfortable with their appearance, avoid certain hairstyles (such as short hairstyles or tied hair) and suffer psychologically from the shape of their ears, especially if they are teased by those around them.

An ear correction can provide targeted relief and boost self-confidence. In most cases, the result remains permanent after surgery.

Methods of ear correction

Various changes to the ear can be adjusted as part of an ear correction. The choice of method depends on the extent of the correction and the patient’s individual wishes. Both invasive and minimally invasive procedures are possible.

Surgical ear correction (otoplasty)

Classic otoplasty is a good option for a permanent improvement in severely protruding ears. A small incision is made behind the pinna. The ear cartilage is reshaped, folded or, if necessary, reduced to bring the ear closer to the head. The fine scar is optimally concealed behind the ear and is therefore not visible. Depending on age, the procedure can be performed under twilight sleep or general anesthesia (for children) or with a gentle local anesthetic (for adults).

Correction of the ear shape with hyaluron

Minimally invasive correction with hyaluronic acid can be used for slight asymmetries or inconspicuous shape deviations. The filler is primarily known from wrinkle and volume treatment. It is injected specifically into the auricle or earlobe to even out the shape. The treatment is painless, requires no downtime and can be performed on an outpatient basis. The result can be seen immediately after the treatment; it lasts for several months and can be refreshed as required.

Earlobe correction / reconstruction

Age-related changes or damage caused by jewelry can lead to overstretched or torn earlobes. Many patients subsequently regret using ear tunnels that have been in vogue for a long time and now wish to have the extended ear holes corrected. Earlobe reconstruction is surgically possible. The affected tissue is removed and the natural shape of the earlobe is restored. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

Cost of an ear correction in Zurich

The cost of an ear correction depends on the type and extent of the procedure and can vary. An otoplasty is approximately priced from CHF 7,000.

This includes all expenses for the operation, anesthesia and all follow-up checks. We will be happy to provide you with a specific quote in a personal consultation.

For children and adolescents, the costs may be covered by health insurance in individual cases. We will be happy to advise you in detail.

Risks of an ear correction

Ear correction is one of the low-risk routine procedures in plastic surgery. It is therefore one of the few aesthetic procedures that are performed on children before they reach the age of majority. As with any operation, swelling, post-operative bleeding or slight feelings of pressure may occur. In rare cases, asymmetrical healing or a new protrusion of the ear may occur. Precise planning, a gentle surgical technique and consistent aftercare reduce these risks to a minimum.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about ear correction in Zurich

The ears are largely fully grown from the age of 4. From this point onwards, correction may be advisable – especially if there is already psychological stress or the threat of teasing.

Thanks to local anesthesia or twilight sleep, you will not feel any pain during the procedure. The healing phase is also usually uncomplicated – any feelings of tension can be easily treated with mild painkillers.

The incision is made behind the ear. The scar is hidden and is usually no longer visible once the wound has healed.

The bandage should be worn during the day for 7 to 14 days and then at night for a further 1 to 2 weeks to stabilize the result and protect the ear.

If performed correctly, the result of surgical ear correction is permanent. A relapse is very rare and is usually due to inadequate aftercare or trauma.
