Procedure for eyelid lift surgery
at Tremp Plastic Surgery

Preparation

In a personal consultation, we will examine your eye area in detail, determine the degree of skin sagging and discuss your wishes and expectations. We will provide you with comprehensive information about the procedure, the possible risks and the healing phase. For optimal preparation, we also recommend that you stop taking blood-thinning medication (e.g. aspirin) at least one week before the procedure and avoid alcohol and nicotine during this time.

The intervention

The operation is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with twilight sleep. During an upper eyelid lift, a fine incision is made in the natural eyelid crease so that any subsequent scars remain almost invisible. Excess skin, fatty tissue and, if necessary, parts of the underlying muscle tissue are gently removed. In a lower eyelid lift, the incision is usually made just below the lash line. In this way, later scars are also optimally concealed. The lower eyelid lift is technically more demanding than the upper eyelid lift and requires precise planning.
In both cases, however, the procedure is outpatient, so you can return home on the same day.

Aftercare

Regular cooling is advisable in the first few days after the operation to reduce swelling and bruising. Protect your eyes and avoid physical exertion. The stitches can finally be removed after about 5-7 days. Light make-up application is possible after 10 days, physical exercise after about 3-4 weeks. However, you should ensure that you wear sun protection in the form of sunglasses or sun hats for several months to help the scars heal inconspicuously. Reasons for a
eyelid lift

With increasing age, the skin around the eyes loses elasticity. However, even at a young age, there may already be a pronounced sagging of the eyelids due to genetic predisposition. This can lead to various aesthetic and functional limitations, which is why many patients want a correction.

The most common reasons for an eyelid lift include

  • Aesthetically disturbing drooping eyelids or bags under the eyes
  • Restriction of the field of vision due to hanging fabric
  • Pressure from excess skin and fatty tissue on the eye
  • Permanent puffiness of the eyes
  • Sweating in the skin fold of the sagging tissue
  • Overexertion of the eyes
  • Constant raising of the eyebrows (promotes forehead wrinkles)

An eyelid lift specifically corrects these conditions by removing or repositioning excess skin and stored fatty tissue and tightening the skin.

Methods of eyelid lifting

Basically, we differentiate between an upper eyelid lift and a lower eyelid lift. Both procedures aim to remove excess tissue, harmonize the eyelid contour and achieve an awake, refreshed facial expression – but with different focuses.

Lower eyelid lift

The lower eyelid lift (lower blepharoplasty) focuses on the area below the eyes, in particular on pronounced bags under the eyes, wrinkles or excess skin. Bulging fatty tissue is either removed or repositioned to achieve a smoother and more youthful eyelid contour.

Upper eyelid lift

Upper eyelid lifting (upper blepharoplasty) is a proven procedure for correcting drooping eyelids, i.e. sagging skin in the upper eyelid area. It is usually caused by age, but can also occur in adolescents for genetic reasons.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about eyelid lifting in Zurich

The results of an upper or lower eyelid lift are usually visible for 10 to 15 years. As the ageing process continues, excess skin can form again in the long term – but often to a much lesser extent.

Thanks to twilight sleep and local anesthesia, the operation is completely pain-free. There may be a slight feeling of tension and swelling after the procedure, but this can be easily treated with cooling and painkillers.

The incisions are made in natural skin folds – in the eyelid crease of the upper eyelid or just under the lash line of the lower eyelid. After complete healing, the scars are barely visible.

Most patients are socially acceptable again after around 7 to 10 days. Slight swelling or bruising may persist during this time, but can usually be easily concealed with make-up or sunglasses.

An upper eyelid lift removes excess skin from drooping eyelids, while a lower eyelid lift corrects bags under the eyes. Both procedures have different focuses and techniques, but together they aim to achieve a refreshed, fresh facial expression.
