Procedure for rhinoplasty

Preparation

During a detailed consultation, we will discuss your wishes, their feasibility and the most suitable procedure for you. A thorough examination, possibly with imaging, is used for precise planning.
Before the operation, you should stop taking blood-thinning medication (in consultation with your family doctor) and avoid alcohol and nicotine.

The intervention

The operation is performed on an outpatient basis and – depending on the desired correction – either under general or local anesthesia. Depending on the method, a closed or open approach is chosen. Bony and cartilaginous structures are carefully reshaped, straightened or removed. Functional corrections such as straightening the nasal septum (septoplasty) are also possible. The procedure takes about 3 hours.

Aftercare

After the operation, a plastic or plaster splint and special tape are applied to stabilize the nose in the desired shape. The splint remains in place for about 1-2 weeks. Swelling and hematomas (bruising) usually occur in the first few days, but these subside quickly. As a rule, you will be able to socialize again after the splint has been removed; sporting activities are possible again after 6 to 8 weeks. For optimum results, you should protect your nose from direct sunlight for several months (SPF 50+).

Reasons for a
rhinoplasty

A nose correction may be necessary for both aesthetic and functional reasons – or a combination of both factors. The most common aesthetic indications include

Non-surgical rhinoplasty with hyaluronic acid or autologous fat

In the case of minor irregularities, a nose correction can be performed without surgery – through targeted injections of hyaluronic acid or autologous fat. This can be used, for example, to conceal small bumps or create harmonious lines. This method is particularly suitable for temporary corrections, as hyaluronic acid is broken down again over time.

Rhinoplasty with closed access

With the closed rhinoplasty technique, the incision is made inside the nose. This method is particularly suitable for moderate corrections that do not require complex restructuring. The advantage: no visible scars and faster healing.

Rhinoplasty with open access

With this method, a fine incision is also made on the bridge of the nose between the nostrils. The open technique allows the surgeon a better view of the internal structures and offers more flexibility for complex procedures. The fine scar fades after a short time and is usually barely visible later on.

Functional rhinoplasty (e.g. septoplasty)

Functional problems such as a curved nasal septum or a narrowing of the nasal passages can make a correction medically necessary. The focus here is on improving nasal breathing and restoring normal function. At the same time, the external shape can be optimized in many cases.

Aesthetic-functional combination procedures

It often makes sense to treat aesthetic and functional aspects together – for example, in the case of a crooked nose that affects both appearance and breathing. The best result for form and function is achieved in a carefully planned combination procedure.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty in Zurich

The first healing phase is completed after approx. 1-2 weeks. However, swelling in the inner area of the nose may persist for some time. The final result is usually visible after a few months.

With the closed technique, no external scars remain. With open rhinoplasty, a fine scar remains on the bridge of the nose, which, however, becomes almost invisible after a few weeks if the healing process goes well.

In functional rhinoplasty or combined procedures, nasal breathing is specifically improved, for example by straightening the nasal septum or widening narrowed nasal valves.

After around 1-2 weeks, you will usually be able to socialize and work again. Swelling or hematomas have usually subsided considerably by this time.
