Procedure for a lower eyelid lift

Preparation

In a personal consultation, we will discuss your wishes, examine your anatomical conditions and present you with a treatment plan tailored to you on this basis. We will answer all your questions in detail so that you are well prepared for your lower eyelid lift. Careful planning is the basis for maximum safety and an optimal result. You should therefore stop taking blood-thinning medication and abstain from nicotine before the procedure.

The intervention

The lower eyelid lift is performed on an outpatient basis under twilight sleep with local anesthesia. Depending on the method, the incision is made either below the eyelashes (transcutaneous) or on the inside of the eyelid (transconjunctival). Excess fatty tissue is removed or moved to the tear trough to create a smooth transition to the cheek. If necessary, the skin is gently tightened. The operation usually takes about an hour.

Aftercare

In the first few days after the operation, you should regularly cool the eye area and avoid physical exertion. Rest and an upright position of the upper body support the healing process. Stitches are removed after about a week, swelling and bruising usually disappear within 7-10 days. You should avoid sport and direct sunlight for about 3-4 weeks. Strong sun protection (SPF 50+) is essential for scar care so that the surgical scars heal optimally and do not darken.

Reasons for a lower eyelid lift

Bags under the eyes can develop when the fatty tissue around the eyes bulges forward and the skin loses elasticity at the same time. As a result, visible puffiness forms under the eyes, often accompanied by wrinkles, dark shadows or excess skin. Those affected often no longer feel comfortable with their appearance. They appear tired, aged or stressed, even if they feel full of energy and fully awake.

A lower eyelid lift can provide targeted relief here and bring the external appearance back into harmony with the inner emotional state. By removing or repositioning excess fatty tissue and tightening the skin, the area under the eye can be significantly rejuvenated. Which method is used depends on the findings and the anatomical conditions. Basically, we distinguish between three types of eyelid lift: upper eyelid lift, lower eyelid lift and a combined lift of both eyelids.

Upper eyelid lift

During an upper eyelid lift, excess skin is removed from the upper eyelid to rejuvenate the eye area and achieve a fresh, radiant look. A small amount of fat is often also removed or repositioned. The incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid and is barely visible later on. This method is ideal for so-called drooping eyelids, i.e. tissue that hangs limply over the eyelid. If the field of vision is also restricted, the treatment may even be considered medically necessary.

Lower eyelid lift

A lower eyelid lift corrects bags under the eyes, excess skin and fine wrinkles under the eyes. Depending on the condition of the skin and excess tissue, the incision is usually made directly along the lash line, which optimally conceals the subsequent scar. Fatty tissue is removed or redistributed and, if necessary, the skin is gently tightened to smooth the lower eyelid area and remove puffiness.

Combined upper and lower eyelid lift

In many cases, it makes sense to combine both procedures in order to aesthetically rejuvenate the entire eye area. Both drooping eyelids and bags under the eyes are corrected in one procedure. The advantage: a holistic, harmonious result with just one healing phase and one day of surgery. Risks of a lower eyelid lift

A lower eyelid lift is a safe but technically demanding procedure that should be performed by an experienced specialist. Typically, there is temporary swelling, bruising or a feeling of tightness after the operation. In rare cases, asymmetry, irritation or a temporary feeling of dryness in the eyes may occur. If the eyelid skin is very sensitive, there is a slight risk of a temporary ectropion (slight outward rotation of the lower eyelid), but this usually heals completely.

However, these risks can be reduced to a minimum through specialist planning, precise surgical technique and strict adherence to aftercare instructions.

You will be in twilight sleep during the procedure and will not feel any pain. After the operation, you may experience a slight feeling of tension and swelling, which can be easily controlled with cooling.
